Putting People First: The Human Face of MSMEs Across the territories we serve

Putting People First: The Human Face of MSMEs Across the territories we serve

June 27, 2026, is World MSME Day, and offers an important opportunity to reflect on the role of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

This year, the observance is centred on the theme of Human-Centred Entrepreneurship and the future generation of MSMEs in an age of Artificial Intelligence. It is a very relevant theme for today’s realities. As technology continues to reshape industries and redefine and enhance the way businesses operate, it also reminds us of something fundamental across our communities: despite these digital developments, MSMEs are, and will continue to be, about people. People working alone or in teams to bring critical solutions to serve the needs of people both now and for future generations.

The People Behind the Enterprise

Across the Caribbean and the wider markets we serve, MSMEs are the strength of our communities and among the main drivers of economic growth. In fact, several studies report that MSMEs account for an estimated 70% to 85% of all business establishments across the Caribbean region; and 90% of global enterprises. This underscores their importance to economic activity and community development and reflects the resilience and ambition of individuals who are rising to the occasion, meeting real needs, building businesses, creating opportunities, and contributing to national and regional development.

They are our people, connected through quality relationships and ongoing mutual support. Their success is ours, and we anticipate they will continue to grow and thrive supported in part by the ongoing global digital evolution.

At Republic Bank, our perspective remains unchanged: a thriving MSME sector must be built and sustained on a human-centred foundation.

That is why, this World MSME Day, we are celebrating the human face of the stories behind every enterprise.

We recognise:

  • Each family business working to create generational stability.
  • Every small business scaling to navigate regional and global opportunities.
  • The young entrepreneur leveraging digital tools to innovate and compete.
  • The female entrepreneur seeking ways to better bring her skills and abilities to market.
  • MSMEs that focus on care for the environment to ensure they do their part to preserve this space; in short
  • Every MSME, everywhere.

Each of their stories may reflect a different journey, but together they positively impact our collective prosperity.

We Understand That One Size Does Not Fit All

One of the most important lessons we have learnt is that our MSME ecosystem cannot be supported through a one-size-fits-all solution.

The needs of each market are different. The realities facing each business are different. The aspirations and challenges of each entrepreneur are different.

We remain grateful for the learnings that continue to shape our understanding of these nuances and inform our approach. This understanding reinforces the importance of meeting our MSMEs where they are and providing support that is relevant to their unique circumstances.

It is for this reason that our approach at the Republic Group is rooted in understanding, partnership, and relevance.

Supporting Growth Through Practical Solutions

Across our Group, in every market Republic Bank operates, this commitment is reflected in the way we engage with and support MSMEs, not only through financing, but through practical, human-centred solutions.

These include:

Accessible Financing

Financing solutions tailored to MSME needs, ranging from microfinance offerings to SME lending programmes that support working capital, business expansion, and trade.

Our commitment is reflected not only in our programmes and partnerships, but also in measurable support. During Fiscal 2025, MSME lending across the Republic Bank Group grew by the local currency equivalent of US$48 million, demonstrating our continued focus on helping entrepreneurs access the resources needed to grow and succeed.

Capacity Building and Advisory Support

Financial education initiatives such as Project THRIVE, which as we earlier reported, impacted 420 MSMEs across our territories; business management tools, and platforms such as the Republic Bank SME Toolkit, designed to strengthen decision-making and support long-term sustainability.

 Export Development

Export connectivity and support initiatives via important knowledge partnerships and in-market experts that help prospects move beyond domestic markets, better equipped to participate in cross-border trade.

Digital Solutions

Digital banking and payment solutions that simplify operations, facilitate payments, and help entrepreneurs manage their businesses more efficiently in an increasingly digital world.

Entrepreneurial Development

Programmes and partnerships that encourage innovation, support inclusion, and contribute to stronger entrepreneurial ecosystems across our network.

Beyond Access to Finance: We Enable Transformation

Importantly, our role extends beyond enabling access to finance.

It is about empowering MSMEs to navigate key transitions, from informal to formal operations, from local to regional and global participation, and from survival to sustainable growth.

These transitions matter because the success of each MSMEs has implications far beyond individual enterprises. When MSMEs grow, communities benefit. Livelihoods are strengthened opportunities expand and potential is unlocked.

Looking Ahead

As we observe World MSME Day, we are pleased to reaffirm our focus on what truly matters in our markets: the people behind the enterprises.

While technology will continue to shape the future of business, the future of MSMEs will continue to be defined by the people who bring ideas to life, create value, and contribute to the development of their communities every day.

Learn more about how we can help your MSME grow here.

Because when our people prosper and our MSME businesses grow, an entire region experiences a positive move.

Happy World MSME Day to each of our MSMEs and prospects. Here’s to a prosperous future for generations to come.
